The smart home industry has a name problem. Everything in it is called "smart" — smart lights, smart locks, smart thermostats. Almost none of it actually is.
What we've built over the last decade is remote-controlled homes. You can turn your lights off from your phone. You can see who's at your door from another continent. These are genuinely useful features. They are not intelligence.
Intelligence means a system that learns, predicts, and acts. A light that turns off when you leave the room isn't smart — it's automated. A home that knows you're likely to leave in the next 20 minutes based on your calendar and your morning routine, and adjusts itself accordingly before you've thought about it — that's starting to get interesting.
Why This Problem Is Harder Than It Looks
The gap between remote control and genuine intelligence isn't primarily a software problem. It's a data and integration problem.
Most smart home devices are islands. The lock knows when you come and go. The thermostat knows the temperature. The lights know when they're on. But they don't talk to each other in any meaningful way, they don't build a model of your behaviour, and they certainly don't coordinate to do something useful before you've asked them to.
Building genuine intelligence into a home requires solving three things simultaneously: device integration (getting all the hardware talking to a single orchestration layer), behavioural modelling (building a model of how the people in the home actually live), and predictive action (using that model to act usefully, before being asked).
What We're Building at Heseos
Heseos starts with the hardware that people already interact with most: the touch panel. Not because it's the most technically interesting surface, but because it's the one people actually use every day. The panel is the interface layer between the resident and the home — and making that interface genuinely intelligent is the first problem worth solving.
The panel connects to a cloud orchestration layer that aggregates data across every device in the home. Mobile app control gives residents visibility and override capability. But the goal is that residents should need to use the app less and less over time, as the system learns what they want and handles it.
Voice agents allow natural language interaction — not the scripted command-response patterns of first-generation voice assistants, but context-aware conversation that understands the state of the home and the likely intent behind a request.
Edge AI means that certain inferences and actions happen locally, without a cloud round-trip. This matters for response time, for privacy, and for reliability when the internet connection is unavailable.
Predictive automation is where the real intelligence lives. The system builds a model of each household's rhythms — when people wake, when they leave, when they return, what they do in different spaces at different times — and uses that model to prepare the environment accordingly.
Why TEN Labs Is the Right Builder
Hardware-software integration is genuinely hard. Most AI companies don't want to touch hardware. Most hardware companies don't have the AI capability to build what we're describing.
